Editorial Review for SET Game
This award winning card game is for one or more players. It is recommended for ages six and above. The object of the game is to identify "sets" of three cards. Each card is unique in its four features; color - red, green or purple, symbol - diamond, squiggle or oval, shading - solid, striped or open, and number - 1, 2 or 3. A "set" consists of three cards on which each feature is either the same on all of the cards, or different on all of the cards. This game contains complete instructions for play, 81 cards, and a durable plastic carrying case. SET is a card game of quick recognition and deduction. Each card contains one of three symbols (squiggles, diamonds, ovals) in varying numbers (up to three), colors (purple, green, red), and degrees of shading. A dealer arranges 12 cards, face up, and the players--without taking turns--hastily scrutinize the images for logical "sets" of three cards linked by combinations of sameness or difference. It's not as complicated as it sounds: examples include a trio of paired ovals with increasing levels of shading between cards, or disparate symbols in different colors which increase in number on each card (card one has a green squiggle, card two a pair of purple ovals, card three a trio of diamonds). The trick is to keep calm while trying to make the rapid connections. The Darwinian nature of the game (remember: everyone plays simultaneously) is certain to cause some feistiness among more competitive players. I--Tom Keogh/I

Serious gymnastics for the pattern recognition part of your brain.
Rating: 5/ 5
Competitive pattern recognition - what a concept. The idea is so simple - each card has a number of elements from 1-3, of 3 different shapes, in 3 different colors, with 3 different patterns of fill. You make sets of 3 with each element either being the same, or different among all 3. For example all three might have the same number of elements but all three must have different colors and different fill patterns; the same fill pattern, but different numbers of elements and different colors - or any combination of those factors. Despite this simplicity, the number of possible variations is dizzying. See sets involves finding both similarity and difference across a range of perceptual areas: color, number, pattern, and shape. Since you are racing your opponents to find sets, the game play is fierce and cutthroat. It is simple - yet deep.br /br /What's fascinating is how independent the skills involved are from the usual cognitive abilities other games stress. It's not about tactics, speed, or strategy. The pattern recognition bone doesn't relate to the ability to visualize in 3 dimensions. I find myself well matched with a range of people from relatively small children to experienced gamers who usually whip me in other games. Very small children and people new to the game will have a little trouble initially with the concept of what a set is. It's easy to describe but hard to really 'get'. It comes with a little bit of practice. After a couple of games everyone seems to come to fully understand it. By that time they're invariably hooked. Because it's a card game it is easily portable. Because of the pure conceptual nature of it, you can play with people who don't speak your language. It's a truly great game that cuts across all kinds of boundaries. After a couple of games you can practically feel your brain sweat. It reminds me of how rendering 3D makes my computer's CPU max out. When you are furiously playing Set, your brain is getting a serious pattern recognition workout.

A must have game!

I think this is the best game I've ever played. It's so fun! Yes, it is addicting and you will see the shapes in your sleep. If you enjoy challenging your mind, you'll absolutely love this game. Super simple yet complex. I've yet to beat my 11 year old who seems to be a natural. Still, I know I have stealth like set seeking capabilities just waiting to come out.

I was at my brother's house for a family get-together when I spotted my 9 year old niece playing SET by herself. When my five year old son and I came over she quickly explained the "rules" for finding a set and she got right back to concentrating on her game again. I couldn't help trying to make sets as well as I sat by her, but it wasn't easy. About 5 minutes later my brother-in-law came over and he also couldn't help joining in. I was amazed that my niece was finding set after set and was timing herself to see how quickly she could find them! When everyone went to bed at night I took the cards and played set by myself. I was hooked!br /br /The next day I purchased my own set. Now my 5-year old son and I play all the time. We have both gotten pretty good at finding sets quickly and it sometimes we haven't laid all the cards down yet before someone shouts "SET!" br /br /I have purchased many games for friends and family.....as matter of fact I am purchasing some more right now!! br /

Set Gamebr /I purchased this game for my 9 and 6 year old. This has turned out to be our family game night favorite. The game builds analytical, observational skills. I would highly recommend it for kids above 6 years of age.
